A Chic Addition to Hampden's Dining Scene Tamar Fleishman, Baltimore Restaurant Examiner
If you're looking for a chic little luncheon (and they serve dinner, too) in Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood, Alchemy is your best bet. Decorated in modern, muted tones, dress is dressy casual during the day.
The cuisine is also modern and inventive takes on familiar favorites. Deconstruction and reconstruction awake the taste buds.
Alchemy calls its cocktails "potions": the Love Potion is fruity and sweet, but served cold enough to still be thirst quenching. It's made with Stoli Blackberi, Cointreau, Napa Puree, and Chambord.
A recent special was buttermilk chipotle marinated soft shell crab with applewood smoked bacon and ciabatta. This is a completely different take on the expected rye-soft shell-onion sandwich, yet the flavors and textures work beautifully together. The smokiness of the bacon is a great enhancement to soft shell crabs. Ciabatta adds a more complimentary crunch than rye bread would.
Another recent special was a wonderful chicken and dumplings. It's the kind of thing that probably not even your mom was still making when you were a kid, but people still seem to have a kind of "nostalgia" for it. No matter, Alchemy's is excellent. The chicken was prepared with lots of fresh herbs, taking the flavors way far away from the frozen food version you may know. The dumplings were extra light, served with a mirepoix in a velvety sauce. |

Had Me at its Appetizers Rob Kasper, The Baltimore Sun
Alchemy, a stylish new bistro in Hampden, had me at its appetizers. The food here is American fare jazzed up with exceptional ingredients.
The first floor, with polished wood tables and chairs with leopard-print seat covers, has the look of an American bistro. The upstairs, a smaller room, has the look of a provincial French restaurant. White tablecloths, low ceilings and, at the end of the room, a small, gorgeous bar.
The fish plate had just the right amount of applewood smoke, which gave the fillet of trout and the salmon a hint of wood flavor without being overpowering. The chicken liver pate was also a winner. Another entree, the pecan-crusted lamb chops, was superb. The surprise of the night was a side dish of hominy cakes. Mama, what a dish! Desserts looked stunning. |

Polished & Sophisticated — But Comfortable & Welcoming Suzanne Loudermilk, Baltimore Magazine
The menu offers various twists to traditional dishes (like the Calypso hummus made with butterscotch bean) and other creative fare in a variety of prices. For instance, for dinner, you can get a huge cowboy steak or chicken and dumplings with a salad. Diners can also opt for a flatbread or something from the “beginnings” list like scallops Provençal.
Alchemy is also serving Sunday brunch, the only champagne brunch on The Avenue. Offerings include a Baltimore Benedict with Old Bay sausage, crepes, a strawberry blintz omelet, and lots more. |

The Mojito Mussels
We went to Alchemy the first Friday that it was opened. It was first Fridays on the Avenue and so it was very busy too. We went upstairs to the friendly bar to wait for a table. We started with the Mojito Mussels and my fiancee had the Veal and I had the vegetable stack with quinoa. Everything including the service was great. The owner came around to check on everything also. |

Great Customer Service
Four of us decided to try Alchemy on a Sunday evening based on the great food reviews. We were not disappointed by either the food or the service. As noted, the crab bisque is rich and delicious. Kudos also for the passion fruit dressing. The decor is hip and the service was outstanding. |
